Christmas Work

I kept myself busy around the holidays making stuff for gifts, both for us and for others.
Here's a sampling:

Nifty hand-warmers for 8 and 9 year old boys. Roar!

New stockings for the Hilton 6!

Fleece blanket & diaper changing pad for newborn Isaac.

A few other things, namely the needle-felted wall hanging for my parents, escaped the camera for one reason or another. Artist trading cards and miscellaneous knitted items also are not pictured, but you get the picture. Now that the heat is off, I'm re-grouping and trying to figure out what to focus on next.

The Prisoner

Today I feel held hostage;
yesterday I felt free.
The day before - I don't remember.

Moments of freedom are scattered
here and there
and I live to remember them.

Embittered at times by being told
when to sleep
when to wake
what to eat, and where, hot or cold
or not at all
where to go
or not go.
When to make love.

He doesn't understand why -
why we are his beseiged.
A blank stare, or none at all is our answer.
But now and then a look,
a faint connection and my spirits rise
with the fragile hope that his days
of being a hostage within himself
can one day be over.

Away

As it were, conforming not an option,
we look the other way.
Seeking respite from the bashing
offered by society,
the rejection and biased glances;
we withdraw.
Nothing to offer the superficial daily existence,
grinding onward in a melancholy haze,
we cast glances in other directions
and turn our attention inward.
We are us
and ever will be.
Pliable and adapting to obstacles thrown in our path,
we step
upward and beyond
to look above the distortion
and into our very own
private
quiet.
It is here that love surrounds
and falls are softened
by God's gentle mercy.

Prairie

Opulent the sapphire headcovering,
Swallowed up in the whole;
solid, unending firmament,
I long to stay tangled in the security of the earth and air.

Inexplicable sorrow and hope
from above and below;
Larger than life it looms ahead
and behind,
to right and left, above and below.

Formidable and unyielding,
it grants passage to those who seek it,
giving special rights
to those who respect it.

Quietly and without notice
it changes face.
Unrecognizeable to those
who cannot see its beauty.

Secrets offered
in the quiet murmurings of wind and grass.
Unrequited solace freely given,
Beckoning to return and pay homage.
